2008-09 HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The Culinary Academy of Long Island (CALI) is one of the leading training centers on Long Island for the regional culinary and hospitality industries. Its certificate program offerings in Professional Cooking, Hotel and Restaurant Management and Professional Pastry and Baking put students into environments that simulate on-the-job conditions under the direction of experienced professionals. The programs are short, tightly managed and culminate in internships at top Long Island restaurants, hotels, food service organizations, bakeries, catering houses or resorts.
As part of its outreach to high schools in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens counties, CALI is offering scholarships to graduating high school students who display serious interest in working in these industries, strong personal motivation and some creative instinct. Please feel free to contact us with any questions.
Scholarship Fund
CALI has contributed $60,000 to a scholarship fund, with scholarships to be awarded to graduating high school seniors in April 2008 for use, after graduation, for enrollment in specific program areas during the summer of 2008. The awards include:
Three (3) full scholarships:
- Professional Cooking: up to $16,500*: Full scholarship for the 900-hour (nine-month), full-time Professional Cooking certificate program, including a 300-hour internship. Includes all fees, books and supplies.
- Hotel and Restaurant Management: up to $13,000*: Full scholarship for the 900-hour Hotel and Restaurant Management certificate program (day session/9 months; evening session/13 months), including a 300-hour internship. Includes all fees, books and supplies.
- Professional Pastry and Baking: up to $11,000*: Full scholarship for the 600-hour Professional Pastry and Baking certificate program (day session/6 months; evening session/9 months), including a 200-hour internship. Includes all fees, books and supplies.
Full scholarships are applied to a student’s account as tuition is earned by the school according to its refund policy.
Ten (10) $2,000 scholarships applicable to payments for tuition, fees, books and/or supplies for:
- Professional Cooking (4 awards)
- Hotel and Restaurant Management (3 awards)
- Professional Pastry and Baking (3 awards)
Partial scholarships are applied to a student’s account as tuition, fees and book/supplies are charged until the scholarship amount is reached. The student is then responsible for the balance of educational costs.
* The amount of the full scholarship is determined by deducting any other grant aid (e.g., a federal Pell grant), if eligible, from the total cost of tuition, fees, books and supplies.
Scholarship Procedures
The scholarships are open to high school seniors in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens counties and awards are based upon an application form, a 250-word essay, a letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor and an interview with the scholarship committee (for finalists).
Step One: Interested students complete an online scholarship application (see application link below). In addition to personal information, the application asks students to write a short essay (250 words). The scholarship application submission deadline is April 30, 2008.
Step Two: A teacher or counselor letter of recommendation is forwarded to:
Scholarship Committee
Culinary Academy of Long Island, 125 Michael Drive, Syosset, NY 11791
The letter must be received by the application deadline, April 30, 2008.
Step Three: Thirteen (13) finalists are chosen by a scholarship committee composed of CALI faculty/staff and representatives of the culinary and hospitality industries.** The decisions are based primarily on the essays, the interview process and their demonstration of the applicants’ interest, motivation and creativity. Finalists are notified by April 30, 2008. In addition, alternates are selected at this time.
Step Four: The 13 finalists and their families are invited to a CALI Scholarship Awards Reception to be held on the CALI campus. Alternates and other applicants are welcome to attend. Prior to the reception, the finalists are interviewed individually by scholarship committee members. During the reception, announcements are made as to the winners of the different scholarship award categories.
Step Five: Scholarship winners are invited to activate their awards by enrolling in their classes commencing in July 2008. To enroll, students must have evidence of high school graduation in the form of a copy of the diploma or of an official transcript indicating that the student is a graduate. Winners are free to change programs. Should a student elect not to attend a CALI program, other students may move up in award category based upon their scores and alternates are notified. Should it become necessary, additional awardees may be selected from the original applicant pool based upon their essay scores. Awardees must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and apply for any federal grants for which they may be eligible.
