Scholarship Application Instructions
- Provide all information as called for on the application form. Be sure to include your program of choice.
- In the box provided, write a minimum 250-word essay on the topic for your program choice.
- PROFESSIONAL COOKING ESSAY TOPIC: For as long as humans have existed, food and its preparation have been major parts of the expression of cultures. It’s how we come together as families, greet strangers, carry out religious rituals, engage in courtship and, often, carry out business negotiations. Differences between cultures are frequently defined by which kinds of food and drink are used in these activities. A gourmet food in one culture could be deemed disgusting in another.
In your essay, describe an incident or circumstance in your life where you “discovered” a strange cuisine of another culture. How did it happen? Was it pleasant or unpleasant? Then describe how you feel about experiencing food customs of other countries or cultures and which exotic foods you would like to cook in your culinary career.
- PROFESSIONAL PASTRY AND BAKING ESSAY TOPIC: Great pastry chefs are like artists. They dream of serving a dessert like none ever served before or building a chocolate sculpture deserving of a place in an art museum. Perhaps they were inspired as children watching the guy at the local ice cream shoppe building a magnificent banana split sundae or staring at a five-tier wedding cake.
In your essay, paint a picture in words of the kind of cake, pastry or dessert you would want served at your wedding or in your honeymoon suite.
- HOTEL AND RESTAURANT MANAGEMENT ESSAY TOPIC: Hotels and resorts are a world unto themselves. Walk through the doors and you are carried off into the domain of hospitality: everything you need to make your stay comfortable, people responding to your every need.
Imagine yourself the general manager of a large hotel competing with many others near an airport, near a large city. Your customers are mostly business men and women, often very tired. Assuming that all the hotels are priced about the same, what kind of services would you emphasize to distinguish your hotel from the others and help build your client base? Entertainment? Recreation? Computer access? Food and beverage service? Room features? Etc.
